Actually a lot of forums don't have ANY documentation let alone a formal set of rules. Not specifically articulating the forum rules is really a bad thing, bad for members, bad for owners. Take the following example:

While these rules are pretty generic, they do spell out what the expected behavior is for the people who use the site and if necessary can be used to specifically manage situtations that always come up when people are communicating (or not) in an online forum community.

That's interesting. You got the exact opposite of my meaning from what I wrote. Poorly written because I was thinking that no rules is a bad thing but made the statement fuzzy ... It should read Most site don't have any documentation including rules which is a bad things. I will fix it.
