Setting the password for user root:

Let me preface this by stating that multiple techniques are available to accomplish the goal of this task. The one I present here is quick, effective and above all simple.

WAMP does not set the root password when you install the package which is a problem if you are trying to run your vBulletin site locally as the password is required for most of the applications you might want to run on your local server, including vBulletin.

In the WAMP menu system, find and run the " MySQL Console" pick (it is a sub-menu on the MySQL dropdown)

Even if no password is set, you will see a password prompt in the command window, click enter to get to the mysql> prompt:

At the mysql> prompt do the following:

1) Use mysql database (type command at mysql> prompt):

mysql> use mysql;

2) To set the password for user root:

mysql> update user set password=PASSWORD("YOURNEWPASSWORD") where User='root';

3) Reload privileges:

mysql> flush privileges;

mysql> quit

4) Restart your WAMPSERVER.


5) Test the new password:

Run the MySQL Console again and at the password prompt, enter the new password you set. If successful, you should see the mysql> prompt. If so, Type QUIT to exit.

Be aware that when you change or set the root password, things like phpMyAdmin will break because the have initially been setup to run without a password. In the case of phpMyAdmin, you will need to create a configuration file using the sample script provided in order for phpMyAdmin to use the new password. Otherwise you will end up with a rude "access denied" error message when trying to run it.
